According to Jim Knowlton, the spout on a Midwest Can gas can be modified for better use. The current design is difficult to operate, requiring the user to push down and slide the entire spout back to open it. The first step in the modification process is to remove the o-ring by gently pushing against it and lifting it out. The spring can be saved for future use, but it is not necessary for the modified spout.

The collar that goes on the can itself can also be modified by removing the teeth on the ring that locks against the tank. This modification allows the spout to stay in place when clicked down, improving usability. The red locking piece can also be removed entirely if it is not needed.

In addition to modifying the spout and collar, Jim also advises removing the anti-flame device from the tank to make it easier to fill. To do this, pry up a corner of the white insert inside the tank and use pliers to twist and pull it out. However, be aware that little pieces of plastic may break off and end up in the tank. Therefore, it is recommended to remove these plastic pieces before filling the tank with fuel.
